Why It Matters

Why Family Dinners Matter More Than We Think

No family should have to skip Christmas dinner because money is tight.

Research on regular family meals is consistent: children who eat dinner with their family often are more likely to do well in school, eat better and report better mental health. That research is about a routine, not about a single dinner, and it shows association rather than proof of cause.

What we can do is practical: help a local family put a complete Christmas dinner on the table, without paperwork, without public recognition, and without anyone outside the school knowing who they are.

The gap we're trying to close

Teens who say dinner is when they're most likely to talk to their parents 80%
Families who actually eat dinner together regularly ~30%

The Family Dinner Project (Harvard-affiliated). Figures as published by the project.

Schools identify the families who take part, and only school staff know who they are. We raise the funds and coordinate the programme. Save-On-Foods assembles the packages at its stores, and families collect them and cook at home.

What Families Tell Us

"Nobody made me feel like I had to explain myself. That's the part I remember. They just helped, and it was okay."

Parent, Lower Mainland

"My son asked me why we got a turkey this year and I said because people care about us. He's six. He still brings it up."

Dad of two, Lower Mainland

"Things got tight when my hours got cut. It helped more than I can probably put into words."
